Issue No. 13: Representations of Railroad Work

Most of this issue is a midpoint report on the Center’s “Representations of Railroad Work, Past and Present,” an exhibition and publication project funded by the North American Railway Foundation. John Gruber offers an overview, and several essays and image selections follow. Mark Hemphill served as guest editor of the issue and wrote brief essays about various crafts of railroad work. John P. Hankey considers the notion of “looking versus seeing” as well as “who is a railroader.” Christian J. Goepel looks at contemporary railroad work, noting that “it’s still a world apart” from many more typical careers.
